BeBot – Poland's first autonomous beach cleaning robot

The beach at Stogi in Gdansk has gained a new quality thanks to the work of an autonomous sand cleaning robot. As part of its environmental protection initiatives, Baltic Hub financed the purchase of a modern BeBot device, which it donated to the Gdansk Sports Center. The official handover of the robot took place on Wednesday, July 30, at the main entrance to Stogi Beach in Gdansk. This is the first robot of its kind in Poland.

BeBot is an autonomous solar-powered robot that effectively removes cigarette butts, glass, plastic, and bottle caps from the sand - waste that is difficult to collect using traditional methods. It works quietly and does not emit exhaust fumes, so it does not disturb beachgoers. It is estimated that in six months of daily work, it can collect up to 27.5 tons of trash.

- Gdańsk's beaches are not only a place of relaxation, but also a huge organizational challenge – on sunny days, up to 60,000 people can be there at the same time. Last summer alone, we collected nearly 310 tons of waste from them,” said Piotr Borawski, deputy mayor for mobility and safety. That is why we are constantly looking for innovative solutions that will help us keep the beaches clean and comfortable for visitors. BeBot is an example of such technology – a quiet, eco-friendly robot that sifts through sand and removes small debris, supporting the daily work of cleaning services. I am glad that, thanks to the support of Baltic Hub, we are the first in Poland to implement this solution here in Gdansk. This is another step towards modern, responsible management of public space.

The device stands out primarily for its drive, as it is 100% powered by electricity, including solar energy (it has panels on its housing). In addition, it sifts sand more thoroughly than other similar devices.

- During testing, BeBot collected about 8.5 kg of waste in 10 minutes, including cigarette butts, pieces of glass, plastic, and bottle caps. This shows the high effectiveness of this technology in removing small debris that often escapes during standard beach cleaning. The ecological aspects of the robot's operation, which does not disturb the natural structure of the beach, were also very important to us. Taking initiatives to protect the environment and care for nature is one of the foundations of our ESG activities at Baltic Hub, said Dominika Milion, Sustainable Development Director at Baltic Hub.

During the ceremony, representatives of Baltic Hub symbolically handed over BeBot to the Director of the Gdansk Sports Center. Participants of the event had the opportunity to learn about the technology and application of the device, as well as watch a demonstration of its capabilities on a designated section of the beach.

-The BeBot device will be used mainly for more detailed cleaning of areas of the beach that are particularly heavily used, such as volleyball courts. We are very keen to ensure that there are no pieces of glass, bottle caps, cigarette butts or other small items that could affect the safety of users in the future.
In addition, we plan to organize various interesting workshops and initiatives for children and young people related to keeping the beach clean, in cooperation with entities operating in the field of environmental education,"
said Kamil Koniuszewski, director of the Gdańsk Sports Center.

The handover of BeBot is not the only action taken by Baltic Hub to increase the safety, attractiveness, and cleanliness of the beach adjacent to the terminal. There are plans to develop rescue and sports infrastructure, including the purchase of a motorboat, new changing rooms, sports fields, rescue towers, a water scooter, a quad bike, rescue kayaks, and rowing boats. The investment will significantly increase the safety of residents and tourists using the beach. The terminal has also invested in specialized PortBin Tide bins for removing floating waste, which it will donate to the Gdansk Sports Center, the City of Gdansk, the National Sailing Center, and the COSA Academic Sports Association.

"At Baltic Hub, we have been involved in socially and environmentally responsible activities for years. Our efforts to improve safety and cleanliness at Stogi Beach are part of a broad approach that combines sustainable development with care for the terminal's surroundings. By supporting local environmental initiatives, we want to create a space that is friendly to residents, our neighbors, and tourists alike. The effects of these activities will be noticeable not only during the summer season, but also in autumn and winter, said Krzysztof Perdzyński, financial director of Baltic Hub.

Baltic Hub's social responsibility also includes the personal involvement of employees in activities for the local community and the terminal's neighbors. In January 2025, the company launched an employee volunteer program called “ZawijaMY z pomocą” (We're coming to help), which enables employees to participate in social, environmental, and educational initiatives in the neighborhoods adjacent to the terminal.
