Baltic Hub presents its 2023 Sustainability Report. The 2023 update is a testament of our ongoing commitment to our Sustainability Vision, which focuses on three key pillars: caring for employees, protecting the environment and ensuring safety, and building a strong local community.
The year 2023 at the Baltic Hub was full of challenges, intensive work, but also a number of successes. Among other things, we celebrated the 20 millionth container since the start of operations in 2007. We also continued to invest in infrastructure: the ongoing expansion of the T3 terminal and the deployment of 10 modern RTG electric cranes.
– Looking ahead, we plan to continue our path of growth and innovation, focusing on expanding our regional land network through frequent and efficient rail connections and the implementation of advanced technologies. Our aim is to further increase operational efficiency while respecting the environment and supporting local communities – says Charles Baker, CEO of Baltic Hub.
Secure and stable jobs
The Baltic Hub team has grown by an impressive 21.56% in 2023 to a total of 1,350 people at the end of December. We make sure that our employees feel valued and are provided with comfortable working conditions. We also offer an extensive non-wage benefits package, such as private medical care, subsidized studies, training, courses and sports activities. We place a strong emphasis on the transparency of HR processes and promote equality and diversity in the workplace.
As part of our professional development activities for employees, we delivered 48 361 training hours in 2023, an average of 40 training hours per employee. Training includes specialized courses necessary to perform the duties of the job and improve job performance. We also promote safe attitudes at work through a number of campaigns and projects related to building safety awareness at work.
Caring for the environment
In line with our Sustainability Declaration, we aim to achieve CO2 neutrality by 2050 and are already taking decisive steps in this direction. By 2030, we aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% compared to 2019. In 2023, we have, among other things, implemented new photovoltaic installations and invested in 10 electric RTG yard cranes. All electricity consumed at the Baltic Hub supports renewable energy sources.
Our environmental activities also include initiatives such as “Go Green”, during which our employees engage in promoting green attitudes, such as by collecting unused clothes or zero-emission mobility.
In order to protect biodiversity, we conduct environmental impact analyses and implement compensation measures in cooperation with specialists – ornithologists and chiropterologists.
Supporting the local community
In 2023, we once again proved our commitment to local community development. Implementing 50 diverse projects, we donated a total of around PLN 600,000 to the residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods. Initiatives included educational, environmental and cultural programmes. One of these was the second edition of the “Busole” district grant, aimed at supporting the Baltic Hub's immediate neighbourhood. A total of 1,649 people benefited from the projects. We also became a funder of the “Neighbourhood Creativity Hub” project of the “Friendly Pomerania” Association, which implemented free art and music classes during the summer holidays for children and young people at the Community Library in Stogi.
The year 2023 was marked not only by intensive work and development of the company, but also by a desire to help those in need. We donated an AED Zoll Plus defibrillator, state-of-the-art life-saving equipment, to the medical mission to Ukraine. As part of the aid campaign, we gave Christmas gifts to children from Ukrainian families who are in the care of volunteers from “Biskupia 33”. At the end of the year, we joined the “Help Ukraine” campaign, donating funds to buy food for the most in-need Ukrainian families in Gdańsk.
Baltic Hub is a company committed to the local community. Throughout the year, we organize numerous events and campaigns to integrate residents, promote physical activity and support those in need. In the summer, at the beginning and end of the holiday season, residents could watch movies during the Summer Cinema, organized on the beach in Stogi, and take part in numerous activities such as windsurfing or football on the beach. In September, we organized a picnic called “The Sea End of Summer with the Baltic Hub”. This was an opportunity to enjoy food trucks, a 360 photo booth and a bus tour of the terminal. In December, the company funded a Christmas tree for the Stogi district.
Cooperation with charities
Traditionally, we have supported the Relay for Hope campaign by donating PLN 1 for every kilometre run to the Pomeranian Hospice for Children. A total of PLN 33 346 was collected. Employees took part in the Moving for Charity challenge to collect 1,500 minutes of sporting activity in 2 weeks. For every 6 minutes of exercise, we donated €1 to a charity of our choice. Last year, we supported the charges of the Hospice Foundation Pomerania for Children. For the second year in a row, we became a partner of the Angel Run in December.
In 2023, we continued our cooperation with foundations and non-profit organizations such as Pomeranian Hospice for Children, eMOCja Holistic Support Centre after Loss, Hospice Pomerania for Children and the Inspiring Examples Foundation. Once again, we took part in the campaigns “Safely over water” and “My Baltic”, co-produced with Dziennik Bałtycki. Together with our employees, we prepared a large Christmas parcel for a needy family from the Stogi district as part of the “Noble Parcel” campaign. We donated a tour of the container terminal together with a visit to the Gdańsk Harbour Master's Office to the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity auction.
Our sustainability strategy is implemented in line with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the ESG approach. In 2023, we started work on an ESG strategy for 2024-2026, which is coordinated by a dedicated team. We also continue to educate our employees on ESG in order to create a better future together. At Baltic Hub, we believe that sustainability is not only a responsibility, but also an opportunity to create value for our employees, business partners, investors and the community at large.
