Yesterday, February 12, a vessel from French shipowner CMA CGM, named after one of Gdansk's most famous residents - 18th century traveler and writer George Forster - arrived at Gdansk's Baltic Hub container terminal. The was was greeted on the quay by Neptune himself, the city's mascot.

The CMA CGM Georg Forster ship was built in 2015. It currently sails under the Maltese flag. Its impressive dimensions are 398 meters long and 54 meters wide, equivalent to three full-sized football fields.

The name of this ship is not accidental. George Forster is a famous historical figure - an 18th-century writer, traveler and professor of natural history at the Vilnius Academy. He also took part in one of Captain James Cook's round-the-world expeditions. He is a figure with strong ties to Poland, as he was born and raised in the village of Mokry Dwór, near Gdansk. Jerzy Forster even became the patron of one of Gdansk's streetcars.

- The arrival of the CMA CGM Georg Forster ship to Gdansk is like the return of an old friend. We are happy to host such a unique vessel, which, thanks to its name, carries a piece of the illustrious history of our city and reminds us of the famous Danziger. This event proves how the stories of great figures such as Jerzy Forster still live on in the memory and culture of our city, but also around the world," says Magdalena Jagła, Marketing and Communications Manager at Baltic Hub.

The vessel, upon entering the Baltic Hub, was welcomed by Neptune himself - the mascot of Gdansk. A photo report of the event was shared on Baltic Hub social media.
