We are extremely proud to announce that Baltic Hub has been honored with the prestigious Gryf Gospodarczy 2025 award in the Innovation category!
This distinction confirms that bold ideas and consistent investment in modern technologies are truly changing the face of the maritime industry.
The award-winning Wharf Optimization Project is a groundbreaking solution that has revolutionized the way ships are handled at Baltic Hub.
By automating processes, we have increased the safety, efficiency, and predictability of operations, bringing us closer to the vision of an integrated terminal of the future.
The award was received on behalf of Baltic Hub by Łukasz Raszka, Operations Business Analyst, and Karol Moszyk, Operations Projects Implementation Manager – the project leaders.👏
What is the project about?
The Wharf Optimization Project (WOP) is a groundbreaking project for the digitization and automation of wharf operations, redefining the process of container ship handling. Developed and implemented by the Baltic Hub team in Gdańsk, WOP is a global innovation in terms of both safety and operational efficiency.
The traditional model was based on the role of the Quay Controller, who operated directly under the quay crane, managing vehicle traffic, giving instructions to crane operators based on paper plans, and informing stevedores what fastenings to use. This required the presence of many employees in a high-risk area, directly under the operating cranes.
WOP has introduced a completely new, digital operating model – built from scratch, based on integrated systems and applications designed for an automated process. The key components are:
OCR System, which has taken over the function of inspection and registration of transshipment in the terminal's operating system;
Wharf App – an application providing real-time instructions to crane operators;
Pinning App – an application supporting the work of stevedores, who have been completely removed from the danger zone and now operate in a fenced-off, safe area;
Wharf Dispatcher App – a system managing the order of terminal vehicles;
Traffic Light System – intelligent lights controlling vehicle traffic under the crane.
WOP significantly reduces the need for workers in the immediate vicinity of handling equipment, eliminating the risk of accidents while increasing the precision and speed of operations. This is an example of the application of modern technologies in the spirit of Industry 4.0 – integrating automation, digitization, and advanced data analytics.
The project is part of the Smart Specializations of Pomerania, particularly in the areas of logistics and transport, and interactive technologies. Its success is the result of close interdisciplinary cooperation between engineers, programmers, operational specialists, and end users, as well as testing in collaboration with technology suppliers and the scientific community.
Thanks to WOP, we are proving that innovation can go hand in hand with safety, efficiency, and a real impact on regional development.
