Dear Sir or Madam,
During the night of 26 March, Baltic Hub Container Terminal experienced two power outages and power surges caused by a failure of a medium-voltage cable in the ZMPG SA power grid within the Mining Basin. This failure was external to and independent of BHCT systems.
The outages caused the shutdown of quay cranes and yard cranes, temporary operational restrictions at both our road and rail gates, and an interruption to reefer power supply. Our IT and operational control systems remained live on uninterruptible power throughout.
Power was restored yesterday morning. However, the electrical surges associated with the outages imposed severe stress on the drive systems of every crane on the terminal. To eliminate the risk of crane failure under operational load, each crane was subject to a mandatory physical inspection and individual clearance process before being returned to service. This inspection cannot be conducted remotely and requires a qualified technician at each crane. With the number of cranes across the terminal, this represents a substantial but non-negotiable body of work.
In parallel, the abrupt loss and restoration of power required the resynchronisation of multiple interdependent systems - both within each crane's own control architecture and across the wider terminal operating environment. Until that resynchronisation is confirmed complete and consistent, automated operations cannot safely resume. This process must follow the physical crane inspections in strict sequence and cannot be run concurrently with them.
Our technical and operational teams have been working intensively throughout. Full terminal operations were restored at 12:00 p.m.
We apologise for the disruption to your operations and thank you for your patience.
Yours faithfully,
Baltic Hub Container Terminal Sp. z o. o.
